Historic Snips
Cabo Rojo includes within its 187 square kilometers, not only an impressive
geographic beauty, but a whole range of historic events and legendary
personages.
(see map)
When Christopher Columbus discovered Puerto Rico during
his second voyage to the Americas his men decided to sail along the coasts
of Boriquén (native name of Puerto Rico) and during that expedition
they saw the redish coasts of Los Morillos and they called it "Los
Cabos Rojos" (The Red Capes).
Cabo Rojo was established officially as a town under the
Spanish government on the 17th of december of 1771.
Cabo Rojo is also known as El Pueblo Del Pirata
Cofresí (The Town of the Cofresi Pirate), honoring
the most famous pirate of the Caribbean who shared his booties with the
poor.
El
Faro de Cabo Rojo (Cabo Rojo Lighthouse) was built over solid
rock on 1881, over 200 feet above sea level. This lighhouse is also known
as "Faro de los Morrillos".
Cabo Rojo, being also a port, atracted many inmigrants from different
countries including England, France, Germany and many others.
Cabo Rojo was invaded by the U.S. armed forces in the 13th of August
of 1898 as a result of the War between the US and Spain. On 1900 and because
of the Foraker Law, Cabo Rojo was established as a town with rights to
autonomy under the US Government.
During the XX Century and particulary in the 1960's Cabo Rojo suffered
a significant decrease in population because of emigration to the metropolitan
area and to the US. The 1990 census showed however a significant increase
of its population.
